Does Your Business Need Weeding?

Now that the weather where I live has (mostly) turned predictable and nice, I’m spending a lot of time outside, encouraging my flowers, herbs, and tomatoes to do their thing. But the growing season started as it always does; battling the weeds that were living their best lives during months freezing temperatures. I’ll never understand how they thrive under the snow while the things I’ve intentionally planted enjoy a long winter’s nap, but every spring I yank up the intruders to make room for the stars of the garden show. Your weeds might look different from mine but left untamed, their impact is the same; they steal energy, stifle growth, and waste a lot of time.

You’re a wise one so you know where I’m going with this metaphor. A business really is like a garden in a lot of ways and if you’re not vigilant, you’ll spend your days battling the bad instead of growing the good. You might already have a bumper crop of weeds and not even realize it.

Weeds can look like shiny side projects that actually distract you from your business’ true purpose. They can look like wheel-spinning instead of actual execution They can look like the bad hire who leaves a trail of upheaval and poor performances for you to clean up.
Pull these weeds so they don’t waste your time.

Weeds can look like spreading yourself so thin that you get stuck in the frustrating churn of not giving anything the deep focus it deserves. They can look like the client who is eternally high maintenance and low return. They can look like the clunky, outmoded process that you keep meaning to streamline, some day.
Pull these weeds before they suck your energy.

Weeds can look like self-doubt that keeps you from going for it. They can look like falling back on what you’ve always done instead of embracing innovation. They can look like playing small to fit an old narrative or comfort zone.
Pull these weeds so they can’t block your brilliance and growth.

In nature and in business, weeds are part of the deal, but the fight is yours to win. Roll up your sleeves and get after them! Weeds thrive in the corners of your business that don’t get much attention…so pay attention. They are tenacious so pull them as soon as you see them, never giving them time to root. Whether you need a big weeding blitz or just a little clean-up here and there, getting rid of what doesn’t belong lets you focus your energy on what really matters; cultivating a business that will thrive in all seasons.
